The three reasons the freight line shocks buyers
The first time you see the shipping cost on an Alibaba order, the reaction is usually the same: that cannot be right. Sometimes it is an error, but most of the time the freight line is genuinely high, and it is high for reasons that have nothing to do with the supplier being greedy. Three mechanics push the number up, and they apply to nearly every Alibaba order.
Understand the three, and the freight line stops being a mystery. Fix two of them and the line drops noticeably. This guide walks through each reason and the fix that goes with it. The full breakdown of how Alibaba rates are built sits in the Руководство по стоимости доставки Alibaba, which is the pillar for everything here.

Reason one: volumetric weight turns light goods expensive
Carriers do not charge by the weight on your scale. They charge by the higher of two numbers: the actual weight and the volumetric weight, calculated as length x width x height in centimetres divided by 5000 or 6000. A light, bulky product pays freight as if it weighed far more than it does.
Run the numbers on a common case. A box of 40 cushions, each 200 grams, arrives in a carton measuring 60 x 40 x 40 cm and weighing 12 kg. At a 5000 divisor, the volumetric weight is 60 x 40 x 40 / 5000 = 19.2 kg, so the carrier bills 19.2 kg, not 12. The buyer pays for seven extra kilograms of air. Our калькулятор стоимости доставки runs this formula for any carton, and the Руководство по стоимости доставки Alibaba explains how the divisor is chosen by the carrier.
Reason two: the first-weight charge and fixed customs fees
Express couriers price in two parts: a heavy first weight, usually the first 500 grams, then a per-kg rate. A 1.5 kg parcel can pay USD 25 or more for the first weight alone. On top sits the fixed cost of moving a parcel across a border: clearance handling, customs paperwork, and the destination delivery leg. These fixed costs do not shrink with the parcel, which is why small orders look disproportionately expensive. The fix is to ship fewer, bigger parcels rather than many small ones, which is the logic behind consolidation. The saving is quantified in our guide to whether consolidation is worth it.
Reason three: the supplier’s default courier is the most expensive option
When you order on Alibaba, the freight quote usually comes from the supplier’s default channel, which is almost always a commercial courier like DHL, FedEx, or UPS. Those couriers are the fastest and the most expensive option per kg, and the supplier has no reason to optimise the cost for you. The supplier quotes the easy option, you pay the premium. The same goods often move at a fraction of the cost through a consolidated air cargo service or a freight forwarder’s channel, at the price of a few extra days. The trade-off between the channels is covered in our air vs sea freight guide.
How to fix it: three moves that cut the freight bill
Three moves attack the three reasons directly:
- Repack or restructure the carton. Smaller boxes cut volumetric weight. This is the single fastest saving on bulky goods.
- Consolidate instead of shipping per supplier. One combined parcel pays one first weight and one set of customs fees instead of several.
- Change the channel. Ask for a consolidated air or sea quote from a forwarder instead of accepting the supplier’s courier price.
Each move is covered in depth elsewhere on the site: repacking in the repacking service guide, consolidation in the consolidation guide, and channel choice in the methods guide. The point of this page is the diagnosis: the freight line is high because of volume, fixed costs, and the default channel, and all three are fixable.
When expensive shipping is actually normal
Not every high freight line is a problem to fix. A genuinely urgent parcel flown by courier is expensive by design, and the price is the cost of speed. A single small parcel with no other orders is expensive because fixed costs dominate. And high-value goods that need fast, insured transit may be cheaper overall by courier despite the rate. The question is not whether the number is high, it is whether the channel and the carton are right for the goods. If they are, the price is normal. If not, the three moves above will move it.
Часто задаваемые вопросы

Почему доставка на Alibaba такая дорогая?
Three reasons: volumetric weight inflates light, bulky goods, the first-weight charge and fixed customs fees dominate small parcels, and the supplier’s default commercial courier is the most expensive channel per kg.
Является ли расчет стоимости доставки на Alibaba фиксированным?
No. The supplier’s quote reflects its default channel, and you can usually get a cheaper quote by asking for a different channel, negotiating the PI, or using a forwarder. The quote is a starting point, not a law.
Is it cheaper to ship through a forwarder than the supplier?
Usually, above a small threshold. Forwarders consolidate and price by volume, which beats the per-parcel courier model once you pass about 20 kg or have several suppliers to combine.
Does DDP make shipping cheaper?
DDP does not lower the freight itself, but it bundles duty, VAT, and clearance into one fixed price, which removes the surprise bills that make shipping feel expensive. It is a certainty tool, not a discount.
