Sometimes it is an error, but most of the time the freight line is genuinely high, and it is high for reasons that have nothing to do with the supplier being greedy. Reason one: volumetric weight turns light goods expensive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Carriers do not charge by the weight on your scale. They charge by the higher of two numbers: the actual weight and the volumetric weight, calculated as length x width x height in centimetres divided by 5000 or 6000. A light, bulky product pays freight as if it weighed far more than it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Run the numbers on a common case. A box of 40 cushions, each 200 grams, arrives in a carton measuring 60 x 40 x 40 cm and weighing 12 kg. At a 5000 divisor, the volumetric weight is 60 x 40 x 40 \/ 5000 = 19.2 kg, so the carrier bills 19.2 kg, not 12. The buyer pays for seven extra kilograms of air. Reason two: the first-weight charge and fixed customs fees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Express couriers price in two parts: a heavy first weight, usually the first 500 grams, then a per-kg rate. A 1.5 kg parcel can pay USD 25 or more for the first weight alone. On top sits the fixed cost of moving a parcel across a border: clearance handling, customs paperwork, and the destination delivery leg. These fixed costs do not shrink with the parcel, which is why small orders look disproportionately expensive. When you order on Alibaba, the freight quote usually comes from the supplier’s default channel, which is almost always a commercial courier like DHL, FedEx, or UPS.
