The four channels on Alibaba
Every Alibaba order leaves China by one of four channels, and each has a weight band where it wins. Express courier handles the small and the urgent. Consolidated air freight takes the mid-range. Sea freight moves the volume. Rail sits in between, faster than sea and cheaper than air. The mistake most buyers make is picking a channel by habit rather than by weight, and the habit, the supplier’s default courier, is the most expensive option in most weight bands.

0 to 20 kg: express courier
Express couriers, DHL, FedEx, and UPS, are the fastest option, delivering door to door in three to seven days. They are also the most expensive per kg, and the price structure is built for small parcels: a heavy first weight, then a per-kg rate. For samples under 5 kg and urgent parcels, express is the right call, and the premium is the cost of speed. For a 15 kg order that is not urgent, express is usually a mistake, because the same goods fly consolidated for a fraction of the cost. The rule: express for samples and emergencies, not for routine volume.
21 to 100 kg: consolidated air freight
Consolidated air cargo is the workhorse band. The goods move to a forwarder’s warehouse, join other shipments on commercial flights, and fly at rates roughly a third to half below express. Transit runs five to ten days door to door. The channel needs a forwarder, which is the trade-off: you coordinate one more party, and you gain a much lower freight line and proper documentation. For the typical Alibaba buyer shipping 30 to 80 kg of consolidated goods, this band delivers the best balance of cost and speed, and it is where the freight saving over the supplier’s courier quote is largest.
100 kg and up: sea freight
Above about 100 kg, sea freight takes over. LCL, less than container load, prices by the cubic metre you use, and FCL, full container load, takes over once you pass roughly 15 CBM. Transit runs 25 to 45 days plus clearance and inland delivery, which makes it the wrong channel for urgent goods and the right one for everything else that is not time-sensitive. Rail: the middle option
Rail freight moves China-to-Europe cargo in 16 to 25 days, roughly twice the speed of sea at a price between air and sea. The lane matters most for European buyers, who get the speed without the air premium. Rail has its limits, weight and dimension caps, and it is not available on every lane, but for mid-volume European orders it is frequently the cheapest way to get goods inside a month. For non-European destinations, rail rarely applies and the choice stays between air and sea.
How to pick by weight, value, and urgency
The decision rule is three questions. How heavy is the shipment? Under 5 kg, express. From 5 to 100 kg, consolidated air. Above 100 kg, sea, or rail for Europe. How urgent is it? Any deadline under two weeks rules out sea freight, whatever the weight. How bulky is it? Volumetric weight can push a light order into a heavier band, so run the carton through the chargeable weight formula before choosing, because the choice follows the chargeable weight, not the scale weight.
